Tyler Perry is an American actor, playwright, producer, screenwriter, and director known as the performer and creator of a tough elderly woman, Mabel “Madea” Simmons. Perry’s films range from traditional movie styles to recordings of live stage plays, many of which were later turned into feature films. Madea first appeared in Perry’s 1999 play “I Can Do Bad All by Myself”, performed in Chicago.

His self-funded production, in which he also starred, got almost no attention and left him totally bankrupt. In the year 1998, however, he re-staged the play and did so well that he sold-out performances for eight days in a row before moving it to Atlanta’s nationally renowned Fox Theatre. Tyler’s work was perfect in its mixture of traditional theatre with African-American Southern entertainment, which most of the larger commercial enterprises had not thought of yet.
Tyler’s second stage production called “A 1999 Adaptation of Woman”, generated more than $5 million in five months. His popular trademark character, Madea, was created in his play called “I Can Do Bad All by Myself”. Perry played the brutally honest, rambunctious gun-toting grandmother, whose name comes from the frequent African American contraction of Mother Dear.

He grew up with a physically abusive Dad. Hence this caused him to change his name to disassociate his father from him. Tyler also attempted suicide, and at some point dropped out of high school. Regardless, he passed the high school equivalency exam.
Perry described his childhood as a “living hell.” Unlike his father, his mother provided some comfort by taking him to church every week, where he found a sense of peace. At 16, he legally changed his first name from Emmitt to Tyler to distance himself from his father.
Years after watching the movie “Precious”, Perry shared for the very first time that he had been taken advantage of by a friend’s mother when he was 10. Before that, three other men had also molested him. He later discovered that his father had mistreated one of his friends. A DNA test eventually revealed that Emmitt Sr. was not his biological father.
