At CBS, Lester covered various prominent news like hurricanes, political updates, and other national Breaking News updates. In 1982, Lester joined KNXT News Los Angeles as a weekend news anchor. One year later, Holt returned to WCBS News as a weekend lead anchor. He spent almost five years before moving to Chicago to work for WBBMT.

AT WBBMT, Lester spent around fourteen years covering the evening newscasts at the station. He grew famous for covering extensive news reports abo[ut Sports and covering international news about Northern Ireland, Somalia, Haiti and the Iraq Wars. In 2000, Lester worked as a news anchor for MSNBC News. His incredible work at MSNBC earned him a spot as a substitute anchor for NBC News.
