Lester gained experience in covering a wide range of news stories and editing feature stories behind the scenes. He was then hired as a full-time news reporter and weekend anchor for WCBS News based in New York City.
At CBS, Lester covered various prominent news like hurricanes, political updates, and other national Breaking News updates. In 1982, Lester joined KNXT News Los Angeles as a weekend news anchor. One year later, Holt returned to WCBS News as a weekend lead anchor. He spent almost five years before moving to Chicago to work for WBBMT.
