John developed a passion for cooking when he was very young. He first started cooking by working at Le Coq AuV in Apendale. John then landed an apprenticeship in several establishments in Beaumaris in Melbourne after dropping out of college. His first favorite meal was fairly normal and roast chicken which remains to be his favorite crumbed lamb cutlets. In 1991, Torode left Australia and moved to the United Kingdom in 1991. One year later, he began working as a full-time chef for Le Pont de La Tour and Quagalino’s sous chef for the Conran Group.
