John Boyega is a British actor and producer known for appearing in many films such as “Attack the Block” (2011), and “The Last Jedi” (2017). Some of the other films he has starred in include “The Force Awakens” (2015), “The Rise of Skywalker” (2019), “World War II: From the Frontlines” (2023), and “They Cloned Tyrone” (2023).

Boyega’s other notable works include the drama film “Imperial Dreams” (2014), the historical drama “Detroit” (2017), the sci-fi movie “Pacific Rim: Uprising” (2018), and four episodes of the TV series “24: Live Another Day”. He received the BAFTA Rising Star Award in the year 2016 and was also honored with the Trophée Chopard at the Cannes Film Festival the same year. In the year 2020, New African magazine named him among the Top 100 most influential Africans.

In 2020, Boyega played Leroy Logan in the third episode of Steve McQueen’s anthology series “Small Axe”. His performance earned him several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries, or Television Film, and the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries.

His first experience in acting was as a leopard in a school play at Oliver Goldsmith Primary School. When he was nine, he performed in another play at the school, where Teresa Early, the artistic director of Theatre Peckham, noticed him. Theatre Peckham is a youth-focused theatre in south London that helps young people explore acting and performance.

From the age of nine to fourteen, he spent time at Theatre Peckham after school. There were rumors that his father hoped he would follow in his footsteps and become a minister, but in an interview with Sam Sanders on “Fresh Air”, he said this wasn’t true. Instead, his father was very supportive of his passion for acting. Boyega and his sister Grace were also friends with Damilola Taylor and were among the last to see him alive.

In the year 2003, Boyega started attending Westminster City School, where he got involved in many school productions. Later, from 2008 to 2010, he studied at South Thames College at the Wandsworth campus, earning a National Diploma in Performing Arts. While there, he played the lead role in the college’s production of “Othello”.

He then joined the University of Greenwich to study for a degree in film studies and media writing but left to fully pursue acting. He also trained at the Identity School of Acting in London and later became a patron of its Los Angeles branch, which opened in the year 2018.

John Boyega Controversy | Advocacy

In a 2020 interview with British GQ, Boyega criticized Disney for how they handled his character, Finn, in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He stated that Disney shouldn’t promote a Black character as central to the story only to sideline them later, calling the treatment unfair and expressing his disappointment clearly.

Boyega spoke out in support of George Floyd, Sandra Bland, Trayvon Martin, and Stephen Lawrence during a Black Lives Matter rally in Hyde Park, London. His speech gained backing from many celebrities, and Lucasfilm publicly supported both Boyega and the Black Lives Matter movement.
